Old School Runescape, the antiquated model of RS Gold that still looks and performs like the game I sank countless hours into when I really should have been studying, is getting a raid. Its next raid, as it happens: The Theatre of Blood. A fantastic raid requires good rewards, therefore when the Theatre of Blood was announced late last year, players were not able to see what clearing the multi-man challenge would earn them. Jagex responded with Justicar armor, a new best-in-slot armor place (above). There was one small problem: gamers totally hated it. In fact, they hated it so much that, for months, the Old School community dogpiled the horn on the 2007scape subreddit and memed it to hell and back. They memed on it so hard that Jagex is currently completely altering the armor's design. And not just that, the artist behind the Justicar armor,"Mod West," is utilizing layouts submitted and voted on by players. Almost all of Old School Runescape's upgrades go through participant polls, but that is the first time a suit of armor was forged in a passion of memes. The irony is that while gamers hated the'closing' armor revealed earlier this year, they adored the prototypes revealed when the raid was declared. Originally, the Justicar armor was bulkier and part of a trio of new armor sets, West tells me, but as the Theatre of Blood went from obscure concept to real content, the armor shifted with it. Players said there was sufficient DPS gear but insufficient tank equipment, so it had been narrowed down to only 1 armor set. And if they were only going to use a single group, Jagex figured they might also make a new one based on the armor worn with the raid's huge poor. "We thought changing it up a little made sense," West says,"but players weren't quite on board with the first proposal we shared on stream. And , well, Reddit went crazy." The memes came hard and fast. Some players said it was too much like existing armor, including armor out of Runescape 3, the newer, mainline version of Runescape. Many demanded a return to the prototype designs. Others believed the new armor did not seem tanky enough and generously provided some choices, with some calling for a more extreme redesign. It got so bad that some players began to seriously believe a meme that the upgraded armor was by another artist, and that the artist who made the prototypes had abandoned Jagex. But then something amazing occurred. Even as memes blotted out sunlight, slowly but certainly serious suggestions started to Cheap RuneScape Gold shine through. It started with crude Photoshop jobs, but soon appropriate examples and fan art began to crop up. Players rallied around the idea of a milder, blessed armor set inspired by the Runescape god Saradomin, so they went back into West's prototype designs and made a few adjustments.
